The exterior of this gaiwan is hand-painted with the opening lines of "Calming the Waves" (Ding Feng Bo), a famous lyric poem by Su Shi (1037–1101), one of the greatest poets of the Northern Song dynasty. Written during Su Shi's exile in Huangzhou, the poem captures the spirit of resilience and calm in the face of adversity:
"Listen not to the rain beating against the trees. Why not walk at ease, singing and whistling? Sandals and a staff are lighter than a horse. What is there to fear? A straw cloak will do for a lifetime of mist and rain."
The calligraphy is rendered in cursive script a highly expressive form of Chinese calligraphy known for its flowing, interconnected strokes and abbreviated character forms.
