The Glaze: Moon-White

Among the celebrated glaze colors of Ru ware—the foremost of China’s Five Great Kilns of the Song dynasty—moon-white holds a special place alongside the more famous sky-blue. While sky-blue captures the color of the sky after rain, moon-white evokes the pale, cool luminescence of moonlight on a clear night.

The moon-white glaze is achieved through a similar mineral formula rich in iron oxide, but with subtle variations in the reduction atmosphere and cooling cycle during firing. The result is a pale, creamy celadon that appears almost white in bright light, but reveals soft blue-grey undertones in shadow. The glaze surface has the characteristic jade-like quality of Ru ware—smooth, warm, and slightly translucent, as if light penetrates the surface rather than merely reflecting from it.

Across the moon-white surface runs a delicate network of willow-leaf crackle—named for the fine, elongated shape of the fissures, which resemble the slender leaves of a weeping willow.

This master cup is fired using the three-nail support technique, a hallmark of authentic Ru kiln craftsmanship. During firing, the cup is elevated on three small clay nails, allowing the glaze to flow freely over the entire surface, including the base . After firing, the nails are removed, leaving three tiny, sesame-seed-like marks on the foot ring.

Care

Rinse with warm water after use

The crackle lines may gradually stain with tea – this is desired, adding character over time
