Born from the legacy of the Southern Song dynasty, this cup honors Ge Kiln—one of the Five Great Kilns of the Song era. Its surface tells the story of time through the iconic “golden threads and iron wires” crackle pattern, a hallmark of Ge ware achieved through a slow, deliberate alchemy of firing, cooling, and oxidation.
After initial kiln firing, the fine crackles—the “iron wires”—forms naturally during cooling. The piece is then immersed in charcoal-ash water, traditionally made from stove-bottom soot, which seeps into the cracks, staining them a deep, lasting black. The cup then rests, often for two to three years, during which gentler, finer secondary cracks gradually emerge. Through prolonged exposure to air, these delicate lines oxidize into subtle golden hues—the “golden threads.” Together, they create a living map of time on ceramic skin.
Fired in the celadon tradition of Longquan, the cup’s soft beige-toned glaze offers a warm, understated backdrop to the intricate network of dark and golden fissures. Its compact, ergonomic thumb ring form fits comfortably in hand, designed for intimate tea sipping or contemplative display.
