This Longquan Celadon master cup is crafted from natural iron-bodied clay sourced from the Longquan region of Zhejiang Province, an area with over 1,600 years of celadon production history . The clay is rich in iron oxide, which contributes to the deep, dense body color visible at the foot rim and any unglazed areas. When fired, the iron content also participates in the glaze chemistry, influencing the final celadon tone.
The cup is fired at 1350°C in a reduction atmosphere kiln. This temperature is higher than typical Longquan celadon firing (usually 1250–1300°C), resulting in a more vitrified, glass-like body with enhanced durability. The high firing also affects the glaze melt, producing the oily, lustrous surface characteristic of this piece.
Longquan celadon techniques date back to the Northern Song dynasty (960–1127), though the kilns reached their peak during the Southern Song period (1127–1279) . The Ge Kiln, literally "Elder Brother Kiln," is one of China's Five Great Kilns of the Song dynasty, alongside Ru, Guan, Ding, and Jun. Ge ware is distinguished by its crackled glaze, which was intentionally developed and prized, not considered a flaw.
This cup carries forward that 1,700-year-old tradition with fully handmade construction following classical methods.
Unlike the smooth, rounded forms typical of most celadon cups, this master cup features an irregular faceted surface. The body is divided into multiple flat or slightly concave planes that meet at crisp edges, creating a geometric, crystalline appearance.
