“One color when entering the kiln, ten thousand colors when emerging.”
So where do the vibrant colors of Jun ware come from?
Jun ware uses copper as its primary coloring agent. When fired in a reduction atmosphere, copper produces rich red tones; in an oxidation atmosphere, it transforms into green or blue-green hues. The raw minerals also contain iron, which further contributes to coloration, developing reds, blues, and purples. Through the interaction of these elements, the glaze undergoes natural kiln transformation, resulting in unpredictable and unrepeatable color variations.
Originating in the Song dynasty, Jun ware is regarded as one of the Five Great Kilns alongside Ru, Guan, Ding, and Ge. While the other four are known for refined monochrome glazes, Jun ware uniquely celebrates dramatic kiln-transformed colors.
This wide-rim gaiwan beautifully showcases Jun ware’s multicolored effects. Fired at temperatures exceeding 1200°C, the glaze melts and flows across the surface, allowing metal ions to diffuse and layer within the glaze. The result is a complex interplay of reds and purples intertwined with blues and greens, creating a dynamic, cosmic-like visual depth.
The gaiwan features a flattened form with a wide opening, allowing the lid to rest naturally along the rim. The generous mouth enhances heat dissipation and offers a clear view of the tea liquor, while the flowing glaze inside the bowl resembles a galaxy—turning each tea session into a visual and sensory experience.
