Born in the kilns of Shenhou during the Song dynasty, Jun ware stands among China’s Five Great Kilns—celebrated not for painted decoration, but for the alchemy of fire and mineral. Its defining motto, “one color enters the kiln; ten thousand colors emerge,” speaks of a process where copper and iron oxides, fired above 1300°C, interact with the kiln’s atmosphere in ways no hand can fully control. Each piece emerges as a unique record of flame, chemistry, and chance—a philosophy that turns ceramic into cosmic art.

Honoring this tradition, the Horseshoe-Shaped Lidded Bowl carries Jun ware’s spirit into a form made for tea. Named for its gently rounded, stable base that echoes the curve of a horse’s hoof, the bowl sits with quiet poise on the tea mat. Its wide opening welcomes leaves and steam, while the fitted lid seals in aroma and warmth.

But it is the glaze that tells the kiln’s story. Flowing over the porcelain-like body are hues of lavender, oxblood, and slate blue—colors that melt into one another like dusk settling over mountains. Here and there, a subtle kiln change reveals a blush of copper red or a streak of iron grey, as if the fire paused to leave a brushstroke of its own.

Fully handmade in Shenhou, Henan, using local clay and ash glaze, the bowl is fired in a kiln under reduction atmosphere. No two are alike; each bears its own balance of color, texture, and weight—a small universe held in the hands.

Ideal for oolong, dark tea, or aged pu-erh, its thick walls retain heat steadily, while the unglazed rim offers a tactile contrast to the glossy interior. Over time, tea will soften the surface, deepening its character with memory and use.
