The glaze allows the white kaolin body and the blue decoration to be seen with maximum clarity, like specimens under glass.

Traditional Chinese Peony Motif · Hand-Thrown Kaolin · 1300°C High-Temperature Firing

The Ming dynasty (1368–1644) represents a golden age of Chinese blue-and-white porcelain. Jingdezhen kilns perfected the use of cobalt pigment under a transparent glaze, creating decorations of remarkable depth and permanence . This gaiwan honors that tradition through hand-painted underglaze technique and period-appropriate design motifs.

The gaiwan is crafted from pure kaolin clay, the high-white porcelain body that has made Jingdezhen famous for over a millennium .

All decoration is applied by hand using fine brushes dipped in cobalt oxide pigment. The painting is done on the bisque-fired (pre-fired at lower temperature) porcelain body, before the final glaze application . The pigment sinks slightly into the porous surface, becoming trapped beneath the subsequent transparent glaze. During high-temperature firing, the cobalt reacts with the glaze to produce the characteristic deep blue color that appears to float within the glassy surface layer.
