Yaozhou ware and Longquan celadon were both outstanding representatives of celadon ceramics during the Northern Song dynasty. Yaozhou kilns originated in the north; unlike the southern Longquan kilns, they placed greater emphasis on ceramic decoration. Their glaze color is predominantly "olive green," while Longquan celadon is known for "plum green."
The carving on this plate is sharp and vigorous, with a strong three-dimensional effect. The carved scene depicts either dragons or phoenixes—both classic motifs in Chinese mythology. Dragons symbolize supreme power, authority, and imperial might, while phoenixes represent nobility, grace, and empressly virtue.
